Horses

The companion for recreation

Horses have been constant companions to mankind for thousands of years. Around 3000 to 4000 B.C. when horses were first domesticated, they were kept for meat and milk. Later they were used as pack animals. Even before it became common practice to ride horses, they were used to draw vehicles, particularly in warfare. Today their role has changed. Horseback riding is mainly for recreational purposes or in competitive events such as horse racing and show jumping.

Caring for a horse means assuming a great responsibility in maintaining its health and well being. Your companion depends on responsible care before and after being ridden. On the following pages you’ll find information on possible risks to the health of your horse and how you can protect your horse from these risks.

You will also find general information on horses such as what distinguishes the various breeds, how to best maintain the health and vitality of horses, and how to provide your horse with a healthy diet.
